How to relieve altitude sickness
Altitude sickness occurs when the body fails to adapt adequately to the low-pressure, low-oxygen environment at high altitudes. Symptoms may include nausea, headache, vomiting, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. The primary method for alleviating altitude sickness is oxygen supplementation, with the specific steps as follows:
1. If symptoms of altitude sickness occur, stop all physical activity, rest in place, minimize talking, and avoid unnecessary oxygen consumption.
2. While resting, use a portable oxygen cylinder or an oxygen mask. Operate the device correctly according to the instructions, ensuring a close fit over the nose and mouth to prevent air leakage.
3. Turn on the portable oxygen cylinder or oxygen mask, then breathe in slowly and deeply, and exhale gradually. This helps increase the alveolar surface area and promotes oxygen exchange between the lungs and bloodstream.
If headaches caused by altitude sickness persist despite oxygen therapy, medications such as acetaminophen tablets or ibuprofen tablets may be used under medical guidance to help relieve symptoms. Individuals whose condition worsens should be immediately transferred to a lower altitude or urgently transported to a hospital for treatment.
