What is the normal value for high homocysteine levels?
Under normal circumstances, the reference range for homocysteine levels is 5–15 μmol/L. A detailed analysis is as follows:
Elevated homocysteine (hyperhomocysteinemia) is a medical condition classified into mild, moderate, and severe degrees. If plasma homocysteine levels are between 16–30 μmol/L, it is considered mild; 30–100 μmol/L is moderate; and above 100 μmol/L is severe. Hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis, as it can damage arterial structure and promote the progression of atherosclerotic disease. It is also a significant risk factor for vascular atherosclerosis and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Hyperhomocysteinemia can be treated with medications such as folic acid tablets and vitamin B6 supplements, taken orally as directed by a physician.
Patients with hyperhomocysteinemia are advised to have regular follow-up visits at the cardiology outpatient clinic and receive treatment under medical supervision.
