Introduction
What are the symptoms of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)? 1. Gonorrhea: This infection can affect the urethra, rectum, anus, cervix, and even the throat. 2. Trichomoniasis: A bacterial infection caused by the microscopic parasite *Trichomonas vaginalis*. 3. Herpes: Genital herpes is an STI caused by herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2). 4. Syphilis: A bacterial infection caused by *Treponema pallidum*.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) encompass a broad group of infectious diseases—not a single condition—that can be transmitted between individuals through sexual contact. These infections are collectively referred to as “sexually transmitted diseases” (STDs) or “sexually transmitted infections” (STIs). As STIs are contagious and spread primarily via sexual contact, even minor lapses in caution during sexual activity may result in infection. So, what symptoms might indicate an STI? Below, we address this question.

What Symptoms Might Indicate an STI?

1. Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection. Symptoms typically appear about ten days after genital exposure and may affect the urethra, rectum, anus, cervix, and even the throat. In men, symptoms include grayish-white or blood-tinged discharge from the penis, painful urination, testicular swelling, and pain during defecation. In women, symptoms include grayish-white or blood-tinged vaginal discharge, painful urination, menstrual irregularities, anal itching, and pain during bowel movements.

2. Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a parasitic infection caused by the protozoan *Trichomonas vaginalis*, transmitted through genital contact. It affects the male urethra and female vagina. In women, symptoms include vaginal discharge that may be white, yellow, or greenish, often with a strong, cheese-like odor, accompanied by persistent vaginal itching, painful urination, and painful intercourse. In men, symptoms include persistent urethral itching and inflammation, painful urination, and white or yellow urethral discharge.

3. Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is an STI caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2), transmitted via skin-to-skin contact. In men, HSV-1 commonly causes cold sores on the lips, while HSV-2 typically causes blisters around the genitals and anus. In women, HSV-1 similarly causes oral cold sores, whereas HSV-2 usually results in blisters around the vagina and anus. Prompt and appropriate treatment can reduce the frequency of recurrences, shorten outbreak duration, and minimize the impact of herpes on daily life.

4. Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial infection caused by *Treponema pallidum*. In men, early symptoms include painless ulcers (chancres) on the mouth, genitals, or anus. In women, chancres may appear on the vagina, external genitalia, cervix, mouth, or anus. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical: untreated late-stage syphilis can invade the central nervous system—leading to meningovascular neurosyphilis, tabes dorsalis, or general paresis—or damage the cardiovascular system, potentially resulting in death.
