Introduction
Foods That Should Not Be Consumed with Baijiu (Chinese Spirits): 1. Sweet potatoes—may cause abdominal distension, flatulence, and nausea/vomiting; 2. Persimmons—may lead to gastric bezoars; 3. Tomatoes—may cause intestinal obstruction, resulting in symptoms such as chest tightness and shortness of breath; 4. Carrots—alcohol impairs liver function, thereby hindering the timely conversion of carotene, which poses risks to liver health.

Drinking alcohol has become an indispensable part of people’s work and daily life. Many individuals consume alcohol during business negotiations or while socializing with friends. However, when drinking baijiu (Chinese distilled spirit), it is essential to be mindful of foods that should not be consumed concurrently. So, which foods should not be eaten with baijiu? Below, we provide answers to this question.

Foods That Should Not Be Consumed with Baijiu

1. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes should not be consumed together with baijiu. First, enzymes present in sweet potatoes may produce gas during digestion, leading to abdominal distension, flatulence, and nausea—causing gastric expansion. Alcohol can then irritate the gastric mucosa, potentially damaging the stomach. Second, sweet potatoes and alcohol may coagulate in the stomach, resulting in indigestion.

2. Persimmons

Persimmons contain tannic acid and pectin. When combined with gastric acid, these substances form precipitates that are difficult to digest—especially on an empty stomach or under conditions of excessive gastric acid secretion. If persimmons are consumed with alcohol, the alcohol further stimulates gastric acid secretion. The resulting tannic acid–gastric acid precipitates may bind with other dietary fibers, increasing the risk of gastric bezoar formation.

3. Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain tannic acid. When consumed simultaneously with baijiu, tannic acid reacts with gastric acid to form indigestible compounds in the stomach, potentially causing intestinal obstruction and symptoms such as chest tightness and shortness of breath.

4. Carrots

Beta-carotene must be metabolized by the liver to convert into vitamin A, which helps treat night blindness and maintain healthy epithelial cells. However, alcohol metabolism primarily occurs in the liver; thus, alcohol consumption impairs hepatic function, hindering timely conversion of beta-carotene and thereby posing risks to liver health.
