Introduction
What Are Cold-Natured Foods? Cold-natured foods are commonly found in daily life and include vegetables, fruits, and meats. Examples of cold-natured vegetables include mustard greens, water spinach, bitter melon, winter melon, and loofah. Cold-natured meats include duck meat, crab meat, and pond snails. Cold-natured fruits include dragon fruit, pear (especially the “snow pear” variety), watermelon, and mangosteen.

Cold-natured foods help clear internal heat and detoxify the body, and can be used as adjunctive therapy for conditions characterized by excessive heat. For symptoms of excess-heat syndromes—such as flushed face, bloodshot eyes, agitation or restlessness, oral or tongue ulcers, swollen and painful gums, and constipation with dry, hard stools—these foods may be incorporated into meals to help clear heat and alleviate illness. So, which foods are considered cold-natured? Below is an overview.

Which Foods Are Cold-Natured?

Cold-natured foods are commonly found in daily diets and include vegetables, fruits, and certain meats. Examples of cold-natured vegetables include mustard greens, water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica), bitter melon, winter melon, and loofah. Cold-natured meats include duck meat, crab meat, and freshwater snails. Cold-natured fruits include dragon fruit, nashi pear (Asian pear), watermelon, and mangosteen. Generally, cold-natured foods possess properties such as clearing heat, draining fire, cooling the blood, and detoxifying. They are suitable for individuals with a “heat” constitution or those presenting with excess-heat patterns. Thus, people with a heat-prone constitution or diagnosed with excess-heat syndromes may benefit symptomatically from incorporating these cooling foods into their diet. However, because cold-natured foods may impair yang qi, they should be used with caution by individuals with yang deficiency or weakened spleen-stomach function.

Knowledge Extension: What to Do If You Consume Too Many Cold-Natured Foods

1. Drink Warm Water

Excessive intake of cold-natured foods may lead to accumulation of cold in the body. To counteract this, drink plenty of warm water to stimulate urination and promote elimination of excess fluids.

2. Take a Warm Bath

If excess fluid retention persists after consuming cold-natured foods, consider soaking in a warm bath. This promotes profuse sweating, facilitating fluid excretion and helping expel internal cold.

3. Consume Warming and Tonifying Foods

Mutton is an excellent warming and tonifying food. It is traditionally consumed during winter to dispel cold and warm the body. Eating mutton helps eliminate internal cold, generate body heat, induce sweating, and prevent cold accumulation.
