Gardenia fruit (Gardenia jasminoides Ellis), known in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as “Zhizi,” is the dried ripe fruit of the plant Gardenia jasminoides, a member of the Rubiaceae family. As a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, Zhizi is commonly processed by dry-frying until it turns yellowish-brown—this processed form is called “fried Zhizi.” So, what are the therapeutic effects and functions of fried Zhizi? Below is an explanation.

Therapeutic Effects and Functions of Fried Zhizi

1. Dampness-Resolving and Jaundice-Alleviating

Resolving dampness and alleviating jaundice constitute one of the principal therapeutic actions of Zhizi. It effectively clears damp-heat from the lower jiao (lower part of the body), making it highly beneficial for conditions such as excessive internal damp-toxin, damp-heat jaundice, and scanty, dark-red urine. In clinical practice, fried Zhizi is often combined with other herbs that resolve dampness and alleviate jaundice—such as Artemisia capillaris (Yin Chen) and Rheum palmatum (Da Huang)—to achieve rapid improvement in jaundice symptoms.

2. Reducing Swelling and Relieving Pain

Fried Zhizi possesses anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and blood-activating, stasis-resolving properties. For external application, the herb can be ground into a fine powder, mixed with warm water to form a paste, and then blended with a small amount of alcohol. This preparation may be directly applied to injured areas and secured with gauze. The dressing should be changed every three to five days; most patients experience significant reduction in swelling and pain after just two applications.

3. Cooling the Blood and Detoxifying

Fried Zhizi has a bitter taste and cold nature. Its primary actions include clearing fire, relieving irritability, cooling the blood, and detoxifying. It is widely used clinically to treat common conditions such as blood-heat syndromes and red, swollen, painful eyes—with excellent therapeutic efficacy.

4. Clearing Heat and Relieving Irritability

Clearing heat and relieving irritability is another key function of fried Zhizi. Due to its bitter taste and cold nature, it effectively dispels heat toxins and drains heart-fire. When patients present with fever due to exogenous heat pathogens or symptoms such as restlessness and mental agitation, fried Zhizi may be administered directly—ideally in combination with fermented soybeans (Dan Dou Chi) as a decoction—to significantly enhance its heat-clearing and irritability-relieving effects.
