What causes watery eyes?
In general, eye tearing may be caused by cold wind irritation, eye strain, conjunctivitis, dacryocystitis, keratitis, or other reasons. It is recommended to seek medical attention promptly, identify the underlying cause, and receive appropriate treatment under a doctor's guidance. Specific analysis is as follows:
1. Cold wind irritation: In cold weather, if the eyes are not properly protected when going outdoors and become exposed to cold wind, tearing may occur. This is a normal physiological response that does not require special treatment and usually resolves on its own after a period of time.
2. Eye strain: Prolonged熬夜 (staying up late) or extended use of electronic devices can lead to eye fatigue, causing symptoms such as soreness, discomfort, and excessive tearing. In such cases, applying a warm compress to the eyes for 5–10 minutes as directed by a physician may help relieve discomfort.
3. Conjunctivitis: This is an inflammatory condition affecting the conjunctival tissue, commonly caused by infections or external irritants. During the illness, the eyes may feel itchy and experience burning sensations and increased tearing. Patients may use medications such as chloramphenicol eye drops, ganciclovir eye drops, or erythromycin tablets as prescribed by a doctor.
4. Dacryocystitis: Often caused by nasolacrimal duct obstruction complicated by bacterial infection, this condition leads to inflammation within the eye, resulting in redness, swelling, and pain near the inner corner of the eye, along with tearing or黏性分泌物 (mucous discharge). Patients should follow medical advice and use medications such as minocycline hydrochloride capsules, tobramycin eye drops, or amoxicillin capsules for treatment.
5. Keratitis: This may be related to trauma or infection, and the inflammatory response is typically significant, often causing pain, photophobia (light sensitivity), redness, swelling, and tearing. Medications such as methylprednisolone tablets, acyclovir eye drops, or ganciclovir ophthalmic gel may be used under medical supervision.
In daily life, it is important to maintain good hygiene habits, avoid smoking and alcohol consumption, maintain a regular sleep schedule with sufficient rest, and refrain from rubbing the eyes, all of which contribute to recovery and overall eye health.
