Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic infectious disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). After infecting the body, it may go through a latent period lasting several years or even longer. During this latent phase, patients may not exhibit obvious symptoms, but the virus continues to replicate and damage the immune system. When the immune system becomes severely compromised, patients progress to the AIDS stage, during which various opportunistic infections and tumors may develop.
