Introduction

In general, watery stools may be caused by factors such as diet, stress and emotions, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acute gastroenteritis, or ulcerative colitis. It is recommended to seek medical attention promptly, identify the underlying cause, and receive symptomatic treatment under the guidance of a qualified physician. The specific analysis is as follows:

1. Dietary Factors

High-fiber foods can increase intestinal motility and promote bowel movements, sometimes resulting in softer stool consistency. Spicy foods or excessive consumption of stimulants such as coffee may irritate the intestinal mucosa, accelerate intestinal motility, and prevent sufficient water absorption from feces, leading to watery stools. It is advisable to adjust the diet by reducing intake of high-fiber foods and increasing easily digestible foods.

2. Stress and Emotions

Stress and emotional fluctuations can affect the autonomic nervous system, thereby disrupting normal intestinal motility and water absorption. This causes stool to pass through the intestines too quickly, without adequate time for water absorption, resulting in a watery appearance. Learning stress management techniques—such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or other relaxing activities—can help calm both mind and body.

3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS may be triggered by factors such as intestinal infection or psychological disturbances. In IBS, accelerated intestinal motility leads to motility-related diarrhea, manifesting as watery stools. Patients may also experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, fatigue, and changes in bowel habits. Treatment may include medications such as drotaverine hydrochloride tablets, pinaverium bromide tablets, or otilonium bromide tablets, as directed by a physician.

4. Acute Gastroenteritis

Acute gastroenteritis may result from bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections. Pathogens trigger an inflammatory response in the intestine, damaging epithelial cells and impairing the intestine’s absorptive and secretory functions. This causes excess fluid to enter the intestinal lumen, leading to watery diarrhea, which may be accompanied by symptoms such as abdominal pain and nausea. Medications such as cefuroxime axetil tablets, ribavirin granules, or acyclovir tablets may be used under medical supervision.

5. Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis may be triggered by infections. It can lead to intestinal dysfunction and damage to the intestinal mucosa, reducing water absorption and causing watery stools. Symptoms may also include abdominal pain, mucus in the stool, or bloody stools. Treatment under a doctor's guidance may involve medications such as mesalazine enteric-coated tablets, sulfasalazine enteric-coated tablets, or methotrexate tablets to alleviate symptoms.

In daily life, it is best to choose light, easily digestible foods to reduce gastrointestinal burden. Ensuring adequate sleep is also important for supporting recovery.
