Can women drink red wine during their menstrual period?
Menstruation refers to the menstrual period. Generally, for health reasons, it is not recommended for women to drink red wine during their menstrual cycle.
Although red wine is not absolutely prohibited during menstruation, it's usually discouraged for the sake of health. Red wine contains alcohol, which may stimulate the pelvic area and uterus after consumption, potentially causing pelvic congestion and uterine spasms, increasing menstrual flow or triggering dysmenorrhea (painful periods). Additionally, alcohol can irritate the digestive system. During menstruation, when immunity tends to be lower, drinking alcohol may intensify gastrointestinal irritation, leading to discomfort such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, or nausea.
In addition to avoiding alcohol, women should also avoid consuming other spicy and stimulating foods during their period, such as chili peppers, pepper, and ginger. Cold or raw foods, including ice cream and frozen treats, should also be limited to prevent exacerbating coldness in the uterus and causing lower abdominal pain due to cold. Instead, it's advisable to eat light, easily digestible foods such as rice porridge, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and lean meats to boost immunity and help alleviate menstrual discomfort.
Besides dietary considerations, personal hygiene is also important during menstruation. It's recommended to change and wash underwear daily and clean the intimate area with warm water. Regular self-observation is advised; if any discomfort occurs during the period and lifestyle adjustments fail to improve symptoms, prompt medical consultation is recommended.
