The normal serum sodium concentration ranges from 135–145 mmol/L, accounting for approximately 92% of plasma cations and contributing about 90% of total plasma osmotic pressure; thus, plasma sodium concentration exerts a decisive influence on osmotic pressure. Normal serum chloride concentration ranges from 98–106 mmol/L.
