Introduction
Whether a dust mask can be used as a medical mask depends on the protection level of the dust mask. If the dust mask has a high protection level, it is generally acceptable for use as a medical mask; however, ordinary dust masks are not recommended as substitutes for medical masks. Regardless of whether using a dust mask or a medical mask, proper wearing methods should be observed and masks should be replaced regularly.

In general, whether a dust mask can be used as a medical mask depends on the protection level of the dust mask. If the dust mask has a high protection rating, it can usually serve as a medical mask; however, ordinary dust masks are not recommended for medical use. The detailed analysis is as follows:

High-performance dust masks, such as N95, N99, or KN95 models, are made with multi-layer filtration materials capable of blocking at least 95% of non-oily particulates. Therefore, in healthcare settings during shortages of medical masks, these high-level dust masks can be used as substitutes to help protect healthcare workers and patients from respiratory infectious diseases.

Ordinary dust masks offer lower levels of protection and are typically designed only to filter larger particles such as dust or pollen. Their filtration efficiency is insufficient to effectively block microorganisms like viruses and bacteria. Thus, in medical environments, ordinary dust masks do not provide adequate protection and cannot replace medical masks.

Whether using dust masks or medical masks, it is important to wear them correctly, replace them regularly, and avoid reusing disposable masks to reduce the risk of infection.
