Introduction
In most cases, sebaceous cysts are retention cysts formed due to obstruction of the sebaceous gland duct, causing gradual distension of the cystic epithelium by accumulating sebum; they typically do not resolve spontaneously. Treatment options include pharmacotherapy, surgical excision, incision and drainage, laser therapy, and electronic minimally invasive therapy. Maintaining healthy daily habits is also recommended.

Under normal circumstances, sebaceous cysts primarily develop due to obstruction of the sebaceous gland duct, leading to accumulation of sebum and gradual expansion of the cystic epithelium—forming a retention cyst. These cysts typically do not resolve spontaneously. Treatment options include pharmacotherapy, surgical excision, incision and drainage, laser therapy, and electronic minimally invasive therapy. A detailed analysis follows:

1. Pharmacotherapy

When a sebaceous cyst becomes infected, antibiotics may be prescribed under medical supervision for anti-infective treatment—for example, oral amoxicillin capsules or cefuroxime axetil tablets. Topical agents such as mupirocin ointment or fusidic acid cream may also be applied to reduce inflammation. However, drug therapy alone cannot eradicate the cyst; it is mainly used to control infection and prepare the patient for subsequent definitive treatments (e.g., surgery).

2. Surgical Excision

This is a commonly used and highly effective approach. Under local anesthesia, the surgeon removes the entire cyst—including its capsule—to minimize the risk of recurrence. It is particularly suitable for large cysts, those affecting cosmetic appearance, or those prone to recurrent inflammation.

3. Incision and Drainage

If a sebaceous cyst has become infected and formed an abscess, incision and drainage must be performed first. The physician makes a small incision over the abscess surface to allow pus drainage and inserts a drain to facilitate continuous drainage and promote wound healing.

4. Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is an option for smaller sebaceous cysts. Using the thermal effect of laser energy, the cystic tissue is carbonized and vaporized, thereby eliminating the cyst. This method involves minimal tissue trauma and allows for rapid recovery, though multiple sessions may be required for complete resolution.

5. Electronic Minimally Invasive Therapy

This technique utilizes high-frequency electrical ions to generate localized heat, thereby destroying the cystic tissue. It is relatively simple to perform and causes minimal damage to surrounding tissues, resulting in inconspicuous postoperative scarring. However, for larger cysts, its efficacy may be inferior to that of surgical excision.

In daily life, maintaining healthy lifestyle habits is important: avoid spicy and irritating foods—such as Sichuan pepper, chili peppers, and garlic—as they may impede recovery.
