Introduction
It is not recommended to take Wuji Baifeng Pills during menstruation. These pills promote blood circulation, resolve blood stasis, tonify qi, and nourish blood; however, taking them during menstruation may lead to heavier menstrual flow, prolonged menstrual duration, as well as menstrual and endocrine disorders. It is advisable to take Wuji Baifeng Pills after menstruation ends to treat conditions such as menstrual irregularities, dual deficiency of qi and blood, dysmenorrhea, and amenorrhea.

Wuji Baifeng Wan (Black-Boned Chicken and White Phoenix Pills) was historically revered as a miraculous remedy for gynecological disorders. Its primary ingredients include black-boned chicken, ginseng, white peony root, and other traditional herbs. Its principal therapeutic actions are to tonify Qi and nourish blood, regulate menstruation, and alleviate abnormal vaginal discharge. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as dual deficiency of Qi and blood, physical frailty, soreness and weakness in the lower back and knees, menstrual irregularities, menorrhagia or metrorrhagia, and leukorrhea.

Can Wuji Baifeng Wan be taken during menstruation?

It is generally not recommended to take Wuji Baifeng Wan during menstruation. This formula promotes blood circulation and resolves blood stasis while simultaneously tonifying Qi and nourishing blood; consequently, it may lead to heavier menstrual flow, prolonged menstrual duration, and further menstrual or endocrine disturbances. It is advisable to begin taking Wuji Baifeng Wan only after menstruation has ended, when it can effectively address menstrual irregularities, dual Qi-and-blood deficiency, dysmenorrhea, and amenorrhea. As a traditional Chinese herbal preparation, Wuji Baifeng Wan is primarily indicated for menstrual disorders and dysmenorrhea—especially cases accompanied by sallow complexion and soreness or weakness in the lower back and knees—providing targeted regulation. When necessary, it should be taken under the guidance of a qualified physician. If clinical symptoms fail to improve after treatment, patients should seek medical evaluation to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate pharmacological intervention. Aside from occasional reports of dry mouth, no significant toxic or adverse effects have been documented with Wuji Baifeng Wan to date. Nevertheless, as the adage goes, “All medicines carry some toxicity.” In the absence of menstrual disorders or other gynecological conditions, healthy individuals should avoid indiscriminate use of this formula, as it may disrupt normal endocrine function.

Additional Information: Contraindicated Populations for Wuji Baifeng Wan

1. Overweight or obese women

With improved living standards and abundant nutrition, many women’s menstrual irregularities stem not from constitutional deficiency but rather from excess conditions—particularly among overweight or obese women, whose menstrual disturbances often reflect a TCM pattern of phlegm-damp accumulation. Administering Wuji Baifeng Wan in such cases may exacerbate phlegm-damp accumulation due to its Qi- and blood-tonifying properties, potentially worsening the condition.

2. Yellow vaginal discharge

Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease caused by damp-heat manifests clinically as yellow, foul-smelling vaginal discharge. Wuji Baifeng Wan is contraindicated here, as it may intensify dampness and heat, aggravating the condition. Likewise, chronic pelvic inflammatory disease resulting from damp-toxin—often more severe and sometimes associated with neoplastic conditions—is also unsuitable for treatment with Wuji Baifeng Wan.
