Differences Between Flexible Laryngoscopy and Video Laryngoscopy
Fiberoptic laryngoscopes and electronic laryngoscopes are essentially the same type of instrument, differing only in generation: fiberoptic laryngoscopes represent the earlier generation, whereas electronic laryngoscopes evolved from them. Externally, fiberoptic and electronic laryngoscopes appear very similar, as both utilize optical fibers. The flexible fiber optic bundle enables insertion deep into the pharynx or larynx to examine patients for abnormalities.

The primary distinction between fiberoptic and electronic laryngoscopes lies in image resolution. Due to its relatively less advanced image-capture system, the fiberoptic laryngoscope generally provides lower-resolution images compared to the electronic laryngoscope.
Electronic laryngoscopes typically employ more advanced electronic imaging technology, yielding superior image quality. Moreover, they feature automatic focusing capability and allow manual adjustment of focus.
Key differences between electronic and fiberoptic laryngoscopes include the following:
1. Differences in instrument materials. The body of a fiberoptic laryngoscope consists entirely of optical fibers, whereas an electronic laryngoscope incorporates not only optical fibers but also electronic components mounted on the scope—enhancing focusing precision and image quality.

2. Slight differences in examination methodology. Fiberoptic laryngoscopes have a simpler structural design and are typically slightly thinner than electronic laryngoscopes, potentially offering greater patient comfort during the procedure. In contrast, electronic laryngoscopes incorporate electronic components at the distal tip, resulting in a slightly larger diameter and comparatively reduced patient comfort.
