Introduction
The correct method of moxibustion involves preparing tools and materials, identifying the moxibustion sites, igniting the mugwort, performing the moxibustion, and controlling the duration of the treatment. 1. Preparation of tools and materials: Select dry mugwort leaves that are free from impurities and have a fresh green color. The mugwort leaves can be made into moxa sticks or cones for easier ignition and handling. Moxibustion devices, such as moxa boxes and stands, are used to secure the moxa sticks or cones and facilitate the procedure.

Generally speaking, the correct method of moxibustion involves preparing tools and materials, identifying the moxibustion areas, lighting the mugwort, performing the moxibustion, and controlling the duration. The specific steps are as follows:

1. Prepare tools and materials: Select dry mugwort leaves free of impurities and with a fresh green color. Mugwort leaves can be made into moxa sticks or moxa cones, which are convenient to hold and ignite. Moxibustion devices, such as moxa boxes or moxa stands, are used to fix the moxa sticks or cones, facilitating the moxibustion process. Ignition tools, such as matches or lighters, are used to light the moxa sticks or cones. Protective equipment, such as gloves and masks, should be worn to protect the operator's hands and respiratory system from irritation caused by smoke.

2. Identify the moxibustion areas: Choose the corresponding acupoints based on the condition being treated or health maintenance needs. Commonly used acupoints include Guanyuan (CV4), Qihai (CV6), and Zusanli (ST36). Use reliable acupuncture charts to locate the acupoints accurately, ensuring the effectiveness of moxibustion. Beginners are advised to perform moxibustion under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

3. Light the mugwort: Light one end of the moxa stick or cone and wait briefly until the mugwort burns fully and produces a warm sensation. After lighting, carefully control the intensity of the flame to avoid burns caused by excessive heat. At the same time, ensure the moxa stick or cone remains stable to prevent it from extinguishing or falling.

4. Perform the moxibustion: Direct the lit end of the moxa stick or cone toward the selected acupoints, maintaining an appropriate distance from the skin to avoid burns. The distance can be adjusted according to individual heat tolerance and sensation. Fix the moxa stick or cone in a moxibustion device, such as a moxa box, and place it on the acupoint to perform the moxibustion. This ensures stability and continuity during the process. For moxa stick moxibustion, techniques such as rotary moxibustion and sparrow-pecking moxibustion can be used. Rotary moxibustion involves circular movements around the center of the acupoint. Sparrow-pecking moxibustion mimics the motion of a bird pecking at rice, moving up and down over the acupoint.

5. Control the duration of moxibustion: Each moxibustion session should generally last between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the individual's constitution and condition. Avoid applying moxibustion to the same area for prolonged periods to prevent adverse reactions. Moxibustion can be performed once or twice daily, with 10 sessions comprising one treatment course. The duration of treatment courses may vary depending on the specific condition.

The heat generated during moxibustion may cause localized sweating. Sweat should be wiped off promptly, and clothing should be put on immediately to prevent exposure to cold. During the moxibustion process, continuously monitor any changes in the skin and discontinue the treatment immediately if discomfort occurs, taking appropriate measures as needed. It is important to remain calm during moxibustion, as emotional fluctuations may affect its effectiveness.
