Introduction
Rhinoplasty with implants is a surgical procedure that uses specialized materials to augment a low or concave nasal bridge. It is one of the most common and well-established procedures in plastic surgery. Incisions are typically made either on the nasal columella or inside the nostrils; after implant placement, the incisions are sutured closed. This procedure reshapes the nose surgically and is among the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries.

Rhinoplasty (nose augmentation) has evolved significantly over the past decade with the development of new biomaterials, and currently comprises three primary approaches: (1) silicone implant rhinoplasty, (2) expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) implant rhinoplasty (commonly known as “Gore-Tex”), and (3) the newest option—ultra-soft implant rhinoplasty. Each technique offers distinct advantages and disadvantages. But what exactly is implant rhinoplasty? The following section provides a detailed explanation.

What Is Implant Rhinoplasty?

Implant rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that uses biocompatible materials to augment a low or concave nasal bridge. It is one of the most common and well-established procedures in cosmetic surgery. Incisions are typically made either on the columella or inside the nostrils; after precise placement of the implant, the incision is sutured closed. This procedure reshapes the nose through surgical intervention and ranks among the most frequently performed aesthetic surgeries. It can increase or decrease nasal size, modify the shape of the nasal dorsum or tip, reduce nostril width, adjust the nasolabial angle, and even correct certain congenital or post-traumatic nasal deformities. Ideal implant materials are non-toxic, non-immunogenic, chemically stable over the long term, moderately pliable, easily sculpted during surgery, and readily removable if necessary.

Knowledge Extension: Advantages and Disadvantages of Implant Rhinoplasty

1. Conventional Silicone Implants

Advantages include relatively low cost and rapid postoperative recovery; the risk of infection is minimal. Disadvantages include potential visibility of the implant—such as redness or light transmission (translucency)—particularly in patients with thin skin or due to suboptimal surgical technique. Additionally, some patients may experience implant mobility or shifting.

2. Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) Implants

The primary advantage of ePTFE implants lies in their ability to integrate closely with surrounding tissue, thereby eliminating the sensation of implant movement and providing excellent three-dimensional definition. However, ePTFE carries three major drawbacks: (i) sterile (non-bacterial) inflammation, (ii) inflammatory granuloma formation, and (iii) implant contracture. These complications occur at a relatively higher incidence compared with other implant types.

3. Ultra-Soft Implants

Ultra-soft implants represent the latest generation of nasal augmentation materials and combine the principal advantages of both silicone and ePTFE implants. They adhere tightly to the overlying skin, eliminate translucency and redness, and provide natural-looking results. Their main disadvantage is significantly higher cost.

The above outlines what implant rhinoplasty entails. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
