How to use glycerin suppositories for constipation
Generally, the steps for using a glycerin suppository (enema) to relieve constipation include preparation, opening the package, lubricating and inserting, administering the solution, and observing the response. The details are as follows:
1. Preparation
Ensure your hands are clean to avoid contaminating the medication or anal area during the procedure. Choose a quiet, private environment to help you relax, which will facilitate the procedure. Position the patient comfortably, slightly elevating the buttocks, to aid the flow and effectiveness of the enema.
2. Open the Package
Carefully remove the plastic cap or packaging of the glycerin suppository and inspect the opening for any burrs or damage. If there are burrs, carefully trim them with scissors to ensure a smooth edge, avoiding injury to the rectal mucosa during insertion.
3. Lubricate and Insert
Apply lubricant, such as petroleum jelly or the甘油 (glycerin) provided with the suppository, to the tip of the suppository or around the anus to reduce friction and discomfort during insertion. Gently insert the narrow tube of the suppository into the anus, to a depth of approximately 3–5 cm; for children and elderly patients, the insertion depth may be slightly reduced.
4. Administer the Solution
Squeeze the body of the suppository bottle slowly to fully expel the solution into the rectum. Apply moderate pressure to avoid causing discomfort. Generally, one suppository contains about 20 mL of solution, which can be completely administered.
5. Observe the Response
After administration, wait for a while and observe the body's response. Usually, the glycerin suppository will take effect within 5 minutes and trigger a defecation reflex. If there is no effect after a prolonged period or if any discomfort occurs, such as pain or bleeding, discontinue use immediately.
In daily life, it is important to maintain a balanced diet and consume adequate vitamins and protein, such as from broccoli and eggs, which help promote intestinal motility and prevent constipation.
