How to normalize excessive amniotic fluid
Amniotic fluid is the liquid that fills the amniotic cavity. During early pregnancy, amniotic fluid primarily consists of maternal serum—a dialysate that passes across the fetal membranes into the amniotic cavity. From mid-pregnancy onward, fetal urine becomes the main source of amniotic fluid. Throughout pregnancy, the volume of amniotic fluid must remain within a balanced range—for example, it generally should not exceed 2,000 mL. A volume exceeding 2,000 mL indicates polyhydramnios (excessive amniotic fluid), a condition that, although uncommon, requires prompt evaluation and management to prevent fetal complications. Pregnant women with polyhydramnios should follow a low-salt diet and reduce fluid intake. They should rest in bed frequently, preferably lying on their left side, to improve uteroplacental circulation and help prevent preterm labor. Weekly follow-up assessments—including measurement of the amniotic fluid index (AFI) and evaluation of fetal growth—are also recommended. Additionally, treatment options—when indicated—should be determined in consultation with an obstetrician based on professional clinical judgment.
