Since certain fruits are considered “cooling” in nature according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is commonly advised that postpartum women limit fruit consumption during the “sitting month” (the traditional 30–40-day recovery period following childbirth). However, some fruits—particularly those with warming properties—can offer significant health benefits during this period and may be safely consumed. Fruits are rich in vitamins and dietary fiber, which help stimulate appetite, support digestion and bowel movements, and prevent postpartum constipation. So, which fruits are suitable for consumption during the postpartum recovery period? Below is a detailed explanation.

Fruits Suitable for Consumption During the Postpartum Recovery Period

1. Grapes

Sweet and sour in taste, neutral in nature. Grapes nourish Qi and blood, strengthen tendons and bones, and promote urination. Their relatively high iron content makes them effective for replenishing blood. When dried into raisins, their iron concentration increases further, making them an excellent food for iron supplementation. Regular consumption can alleviate fatigue, weakness, and weight loss, and they are regarded as a superior tonic for enhancing vitality and longevity. For women who experience excessive blood loss after delivery, grapes serve as an exceptional blood-nourishing food.

2. Bananas

Sweet in taste, cold in nature. Bananas clear heat and moisten the intestines. Postpartum consumption of bananas can improve mood, induce calmness and sleep, and even reduce pain perception. Rich in dietary fiber and iron, bananas aid bowel regularity and blood replenishment. They effectively prevent constipation caused by prolonged bed rest and reduced gastrointestinal motility after childbirth. Due to their cooling nature, however, intake should be moderate; bananas should be briefly soaked in warm water before eating.

3. Longan (Dimocarpus longan)

Also known as “dragon eye fruit,” longan is sweet in taste and warm in nature, primarily grown in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. It tonifies the Heart and Spleen, replenishes Qi and blood, and calms the spirit—making it a highly valued tonic. Postpartum women with weakened constitutions may benefit from consuming fresh longan or dried longan aril, which simultaneously strengthens Spleen and Stomach Qi and nourishes Heart blood. A soup made by simmering longan aril with egg drop is especially beneficial for postpartum recovery.

4. Hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida)

Hawthorn is rich in carbohydrates, vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and organic acids—including hawthorn acid, citric acid, malic acid, fructose, and flavonoids. Its calcium content ranks highest among common fruits. Hawthorn promotes blood circulation, resolves stasis, dissolves phlegm, detoxifies, enhances mental clarity, stops bleeding, soothes the stomach, and stimulates appetite. It also helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Moderate hawthorn consumption can improve appetite and aid digestion. Moreover, its blood-activating and stasis-resolving properties assist in expelling retained uterine blood clots and alleviating postpartum abdominal pain.
