Can luffa (sponge gourd) alleviate cough symptoms?
Loofah generally can alleviate cough symptoms caused by heat syndromes to some extent. However, if the cough is due to invasion of cold pathogens, loofah may not effectively relieve the symptoms.

Loofah has a cool nature and, according to traditional Chinese medicine theory, possesses the effect of clearing heat and resolving phlegm. For cough accompanied by heat syndromes, such as yellow phlegm and sore throat, the heat-clearing property of loofah helps reduce internal heat pathogens and dissolve phlegm, thereby alleviating cough symptoms to some extent. Additionally, loofah contains abundant water, which helps moisturize the respiratory tract and relieve cough discomfort caused by dryness or other factors.
If the cough is caused by cold pathogens, presenting symptoms such as heavy coughing sound and white, clear, and thin phlegm, loofah's cool nature may instead exacerbate internal cold-dampness, which is unfavorable for recovery from cough. Furthermore, for cough caused by infections, chronic respiratory diseases, or prolonged duration, the dietary therapeutic effect of loofah is limited. It should not be solely relied upon for treatment; timely medical consultation and following professional medical advice for standardized treatment are recommended.
In daily life, it is advisable to consume loofah in moderation. Maintaining healthy lifestyle habits, including appropriate exercise, sufficient rest, and avoiding smoking and alcohol, can also help improve cough symptoms.
