What antifungal medications are available?
There are numerous antifungal agents available. Clinically, several major classes are commonly used; among them, itraconazole and terbinafine are frequently prescribed. However, these medications may cause certain adverse effects—for instance, hepatotoxicity.

Therefore, prior to initiating antifungal therapy, baseline laboratory tests—including complete blood count and liver and renal function assessments—must be performed to ensure no significant abnormalities exist before oral administration is commenced. Moreover, antifungal agents must be used strictly according to established guidelines.

Fungal infections typically require prolonged treatment courses—often lasting several months—whether using systemic (oral) or topical antifungal agents. Hence, consistent adherence to the prescribed regimen is essential; premature discontinuation significantly increases the risk of recurrence. Patients must therefore follow their physician’s instructions carefully when using antifungal medications.
