Introduction
Gleditsia has a strong irritant expectorant effect. It can stimulate the gastric mucosa, reflexively promoting mucus secretion in the respiratory tract, thereby diluting sputum and making it easier to cough up, achieving the effect of expectoration. It is used to treat symptoms such as cough with excessive phlegm and unsatisfactory expectoration, especially cough caused by phlegm-dampness congestion in the lungs. Gleditsia is pungent, dispersing, and penetrating, possessing the function of opening orifices and clearing the channels.

Soapberry seeds usually refer to Gleditsia sinensis (soap pod), which typically has effects and functions such as eliminating phlegm and relieving cough, opening the orifices and relieving obstruction, dispersing nodules and reducing swelling, moistening the intestines and promoting bowel movements, and killing parasites and relieving itching.

1. Eliminating Phlegm and Relieving Cough

Gleditsia sinensis has a strong irritant expectorant effect. It can stimulate the gastric mucosa, reflexively promoting respiratory tract mucus secretion, thereby diluting sputum and making it easier to expel, achieving an expectorant effect. It is used for treating symptoms such as cough with excessive phlegm and unsatisfactory expectoration, especially suitable for cough caused by phlegm-dampness congestion in the lungs.

2. Opening Orifices and Relieving Obstruction

Gleditsia sinensis has an acrid-dispersing and penetrating action, offering the effect of opening the orifices and restoring consciousness. It is commonly used to treat obstructive syndromes such as sudden unconsciousness, clenched teeth, and loss of consciousness. When orifice blockage and unconsciousness occur due to stroke or phlegm syncope, Gleditsia sinensis can help awaken the patient, effectively clearing the orifices and restoring consciousness.

3. Dispersing Nodules and Reducing Swelling

Gleditsia sinensis has the function of dispersing nodules and reducing swelling and can be used to treat conditions such as abscesses, swellings, and scrofula with phlegm nodules. It helps dissipate local stagnation of qi and blood, promotes the resolution of swellings, and alleviates symptoms such as redness, swelling, heat, and pain. It is often combined with other herbs that clear heat, detoxify, reduce swelling, and disperse nodules.

4. Moistening the Intestines and Promoting Bowel Movements

Gleditsia sinensis contains abundant dietary fiber and oily components that can stimulate intestinal peristalsis, increase intestinal moisture, soften stools, and thus moisten the intestines and promote bowel movements. It can be used to treat intestinal dryness and constipation, especially suitable for symptoms such as hard stools and difficulty defecating caused by insufficient body fluids and intestinal dryness.

5. Killing Parasites and Relieving Itching

Gleditsia sinensis has the effect of killing parasites and relieving itching and can be used to treat skin diseases such as scabies and eczema. Its components inhibit and kill various types of skin fungi and parasites. It can be applied externally by washing the affected area with a decoction or applying a poultice made from the powdered herb, directly acting on the skin lesions to relieve symptoms such as itching and swelling.

It is recommended to use Gleditsia sinensis under the guidance of a physician; self-medication should be avoided. A light diet is advised in daily life, avoiding spicy and irritating foods.
