Introduction
1. Excessive internal heat (“shang huo”), characterized primarily by symptoms such as sore throat, oral ulcers, and dark yellow urine; 2. Diet—particularly excessive intake of carotenoid-rich foods, such as pumpkin, citrus fruits, and carrots; 3. Dehydration—adults should consume no less than 1,000 mL of water daily; 4. Disease—liver disorders may lead to dark yellow urine.

Under normal circumstances, urine should be clear and pale yellow, without cloudiness or sediment. However, some individuals may notice yellowish urine in daily life. So, what causes unusually dark yellow urine? Below is an explanation.

Causes of Unusually Dark Yellow Urine

1. Excess Internal Heat (“Shang Huo”)

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), imbalances between yin and yang, along with excessive internal heat (“huo”), can lead to “shang huo” (literally “rising fire”). Common symptoms include sore throat, oral ulcers, and dark yellow urine. “Shang huo” is further categorized into “excess fire” and “deficiency fire.” Dark yellow urine typically reflects “excess fire,” often resulting from hyperactivity of liver-gallbladder or gastrointestinal fire, which may predispose individuals to urinary tract infections.

2. Diet

Dietary habits can significantly influence urine color. Consuming large amounts of foods rich in beta-carotene—such as pumpkin, citrus fruits, and carrots—may cause urine to appear yellow or even orange. This discoloration is temporary and resolves naturally once the food has been fully digested and metabolized.

3. Dehydration

Insufficient fluid intake leads to concentrated urine, resulting in darker yellow coloration. Adults should consume at least 1,000 mL of water per day. We recommend increasing daily water intake, which promotes efficient urinary excretion, shortens the retention time of metabolic waste in the body, reduces the workload on the liver and kidneys, and helps alleviate fatigue.

4. Underlying Disease

Liver disease commonly causes dark yellow urine. As the body’s primary detoxifying organ, the liver processes bilirubin—a breakdown product of hemoglobin. When hepatic function is impaired, intestinal reabsorption of urobilinogen increases, while biliary excretion of bilirubin decreases. Consequently, excess bilirubin is excreted via urine, causing its yellow discoloration. Additionally, liver disease may produce foul-smelling urine and is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and jaundice.
