What causes dry mouth and a parched throat at night?
Dry mouth at night may be caused by dietary stimulation, sleep factors, mouth breathing, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and other conditions. Improvements can be made according to different situations. It is recommended to visit a hospital promptly and receive treatment under a doctor's guidance.

1. Dietary Stimulation: Consuming excessive high-salt foods for dinner can elevate the body's osmotic pressure, leading to cellular dehydration and stimulating the thirst center, resulting in dry mouth at night. Daily diet should control salt intake, and drinking an appropriate amount of water after dinner can help alleviate dry mouth symptoms.
2. Sleep Factors: During nighttime sleep, if the bedroom air is excessively dry, moisture in the mouth evaporates quickly, causing dryness and thirst, often accompanied by throat discomfort. It is recommended to place a humidifier in the bedroom, maintaining humidity levels between 40%-60%, which helps alleviate dry mouth.
3. Mouth Breathing: Some individuals, due to nasal congestion, enlarged adenoids, or other reasons, tend to breathe through their mouths during sleep. Oral moisture directly contacts the outside air, accelerating evaporation and causing dry mouth. Timely treatment of nasal conditions and improved airflow, such as nasal irrigation with normal saline, are recommended.
4. Hyperthyroidism: Excessive secretion of thyroid hormones accelerates metabolism and increases heat production, leading to increased water consumption and resulting in dry mouth and throat. Symptoms may include excessive sweating, palpitations, hand tremors, and increased appetite. It is recommended to follow medical advice and use medications such as Xiaojin Pills, Metoprolol Tartrate Tablets, and Prunella Vulgaris Granules to alleviate discomfort.
5. Diabetes: Insufficient insulin secretion or functional defects lead to elevated blood sugar levels and increased blood osmotic pressure, causing osmotic diuresis and excessive loss of body water, resulting in dry mouth and throat, accompanied by symptoms such as polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, and weight loss. Patients can follow medical advice to use medications such as Metformin Tablets, Glimepiride Tablets, and Acarbose Tablets to improve symptoms.
In daily life, it is recommended to maintain adequate water intake, especially during periods of high physical activity or hot weather; drink an appropriate amount of water before bedtime, but avoid excessive intake to prevent disruption of sleep.
