What causes white mucus membranes on the lips in the morning?
Waking up in the morning with white mucus on the lips may be caused by dehydration and dryness, poor oral hygiene, cheilitis, oral thrush, Sjögren's syndrome, and other conditions, and management should be based on specific situations. It is recommended to visit a hospital promptly and follow medical advice for treatment.

1. Dehydration and Dryness: During nighttime sleep, moisture in the mouth diminishes, causing dehydration of the lip mucosa. Accumulation of dead skin cells from metabolic processes may form a white membrane. Drinking an appropriate amount of water before bedtime and ensuring daily intake of 1500-2000 milliliters of water can help. Routinely use lip balm, especially applying a thick layer before sleep, to lock in moisture, keep the lips hydrated, and reduce the formation of white mucus.
2. Poor Oral Hygiene: Food residues and bacterial growth in the mouth may mix with mucosal secretions, adhering to the lips and resulting in visible white mucus upon waking. Brush teeth correctly in the morning and evening, use dental floss to clean between teeth, and rinse the mouth after meals. Replace toothbrushes regularly, approximately every three months. Maintaining good oral hygiene can effectively improve the condition of white mucus on the lips.
3. Cheilitis: Allergies, sun exposure, and other factors may trigger cheilitis, an inflammatory response of the lip mucosa, which can manifest as flaking, white mucus on the lips, accompanied by itching, redness, swelling, and pain. Patients may use medications such as tacrolimus ointment, hydrocortisone butyrate cream, and loratadine tablets under medical guidance to alleviate symptoms.
4. Oral Thrush: This condition is typically caused by infection with Candida albicans, forming white patches on the oral mucosa, which may extend to the lips, presenting as white mucus that is difficult to wipe off. It commonly occurs in infants and individuals with weakened immune systems. It is recommended to use medications such as nystatin tablets, sodium bicarbonate solution, and fluconazole capsules under medical guidance to alleviate discomfort.
5. Sjögren's Syndrome: This is an autoimmune disease in which exocrine glands, such as salivary glands, are affected, potentially leading to dry mouth, shedding of mucous membranes forming white substances, accompanied by symptoms such as dry eyes, dry mouth, and joint pain. Patients may use medications such as hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets, total glucosides of paeony capsules, and methylprednisolone tablets under medical guidance to improve symptoms.
In daily life, it is recommended to maintain adequate water intake, drink an appropriate amount of water before bedtime, use a humidifier to maintain indoor humidity, and use lip balm containing moisturizing ingredients.
