Can I take Cornus officinalis for tinnitus?
If tinnitus is caused by yin deficiency of the liver and kidney, Cornus officinalis (Shanzhuyu) may usually be taken. If it is caused by other factors, Cornus officinalis generally is not recommended. If discomfort occurs, it is advisable to seek medical attention at a hospital promptly and follow the doctor's instructions for appropriate management.

If tinnitus is caused by yin deficiency of the liver and kidney or liver wind, Cornus officinalis may be a beneficial option. Cornus officinalis has functions of nourishing the liver and kidney and astringing to prevent prolapse, and may help alleviate tinnitus caused by these conditions to a certain extent. Under the guidance of a physician, appropriate use of Cornus officinalis can help dispel wind and cold, and calm liver wind, thus assisting in the treatment of tinnitus.
When external wind pathogens invade and cause wind-heat pathogens to block the ear channels, resulting in obstruction of qi circulation and subsequent tinnitus, Cornus officinalis typically does not have a therapeutic effect, as it lacks the function of dispersing wind pathogens. Neurogenic tinnitus generally involves the peripheral and central nervous systems and can be caused by factors such as drug side effects or vascular issues. Cornus officinalis cannot address these underlying causes and therefore cannot treat neurogenic tinnitus.
Cornus officinalis should be used according to individual conditions and should not be taken blindly without medical advice. During treatment, spicy and greasy foods should be avoided, and staying up late should be prevented.
