Introduction
Difficulty in bowel movements is known as constipation. Under normal circumstances, constipation can be treated with Cornus officinalis (Shanzhuyu). However, Cornus officinalis is suitable for adjuvant treatment of constipation caused by yin deficiency of the liver and kidney and intestinal dryness with fluid depletion. It is not appropriate for constipation caused by other factors or for patients whose physical condition is unsuitable. The treatment of constipation requires comprehensive management, including adjusting the diet, increasing physical activity, and maintaining good bowel habits.

Difficulty in bowel movements is known as constipation. Under normal circumstances, cornus fruit (Shanzhuyu) can be used to treat constipation, but it is suitable mainly as an adjuvant treatment for constipation caused by yin deficiency of the liver and kidney and intestinal dryness with fluid deficiency. It is not suitable for constipation caused by other factors or in patients whose physical conditions are not compatible. If abnormalities occur, timely medical advice is recommended. Detailed analysis is as follows:

Cornus fruit has the function of nourishing the liver and kidney and consolidating and astringing bodily fluids. Yin deficiency of the liver and kidney and intestinal dryness with fluid deficiency are common causes of constipation. Patients may also experience symptoms such as soreness and weakness of the waist and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, dry mouth, and throat dryness. Cornus fruit can alleviate constipation symptoms to some extent and can be consumed in moderation as an adjunct treatment.

However, not all types of constipation are suitable for consumption of cornus fruit. For example, patients with excessive internal heat (real heat constipation) have excessive pathogenic heat in the body, leading to dry and difficult bowel movements. In such cases, consuming cornus fruit may exacerbate the internal heat and hinder recovery. Additionally, individuals with weak spleen and stomach or damp-heat constitution should not consume cornus fruit, as it may worsen the discomfort associated with these constitutions.

At the same time, treating constipation requires comprehensive regulation, including adjusting dietary patterns, increasing physical activity, and maintaining good bowel habits. If constipation symptoms persist or worsen, prompt medical attention should be sought.
