Can Pulsatilla (Baitouweng) be used to treat diarrhea?
Diarrhea, commonly known as loose bowels, is often treated with Pulsatilla (Baitouweng). Pulsatilla has functions of clearing heat, detoxifying, cooling the blood, and stopping dysentery. It is suitable for diarrhea caused by accumulation of damp-heat, but not suitable for cases involving bodily deficiency-cold constitution, deficiency-cold of the spleen and stomach, or diarrhea caused by other factors. If in doubt, it is recommended to seek medical advice in advance. Detailed explanation is as follows:

Pulsatilla has a bitter and astringent taste and is cold in nature. It acts on the stomach and large intestine meridians. Its bitter cold nature can clear internal heat and fire, remove heat toxins and damp-heat from the intestines, and thereby improve symptoms such as diarrhea and dysentery caused by accumulation of damp-heat. This type of diarrhea is usually accompanied by symptoms like abdominal pain, tenesmus, and passage of pus and blood in the stool. Pulsatilla can effectively alleviate these symptoms and promote the recovery of intestinal function.
However, for patients with deficiency-cold constitution or deficiency-cold of the spleen and stomach, due to insufficient yang energy in the body, they cannot tolerate the cold nature of Pulsatilla. Its use may worsen the symptoms of diarrhea. Additionally, if diarrhea is caused by other factors such as cold pathogen or deficiency-cold, the cold nature of Pulsatilla may further impair the yang energy of the spleen and stomach, leading to worsening diarrhea or prolonged illness.
At the same time, patients should also adjust their diet, avoid eating raw, cold, or greasy foods, and ensure adequate rest to aid recovery.
