What causes intermittent breathing?
Generally, Biot's respiration may be caused by obesity, medication factors, meningitis, chronic bronchitis, diabetic ketoacidosis, or other reasons. Symptomatic treatment such as general treatment and drug therapy may be needed. If symptoms are severe, it is recommended to seek timely medical examination and targeted treatment. Detailed analysis is as follows:

1. Obesity
In obese individuals, excessive fat accumulates in the neck, exerting pressure on the airway and causing airway narrowing. During situations such as sleep when muscles are relaxed, this pressure may further increase, possibly leading to airway collapse and resulting in Biot's respiration. Weight reduction through appropriate dietary control, reduced intake of high-calorie and high-fat foods, and increased physical activity can help improve respiratory conditions.
2. Medication factors
Medications such as barbiturates and morphine may, when overdosed or improperly used, suppress the central nervous system, leading to respiratory abnormalities and Biot's respiration, which may be accompanied by other symptoms of drug intoxication, such as confusion and bradycardia. Immediate discontinuation of the medication is recommended, and in some cases, treatments such as gastric lavage or catharsis may be required to eliminate residual drugs in the body.
3. Meningitis
Meningitis is mainly caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi infecting the meninges, which may interfere with the normal function of the respiratory center, making it unable to effectively regulate respiratory rhythm and depth. It may be accompanied by symptoms such as high fever, headache, and nausea. It is recommended to use medications such as acyclovir tablets, ornidazole dispersible tablets, and dexamethasone acetate tablets under a doctor's guidance for treatment.
4. Chronic bronchitis
Factors such as infection, allergy, and decreased immunity may trigger bronchitis. Patients may have persistent inflammatory responses and increased mucus secretion in the airways, which can lead to airway narrowing and increased resistance, causing intermittent breathing difficulties. In severe cases, Biot's respiration may occur, which may be accompanied by symptoms such as coughing, sputum production, and wheezing. It is recommended to use medications such as terbutaline sulfate tablets and aminophylline sustained-release tablets under a doctor's guidance for treatment.
5. Diabetic ketoacidosis
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a severe complication of diabetes caused by poor glycemic control, leading to excessive accumulation of ketone bodies and resulting in metabolic acidosis. The acidotic state may affect brain function, especially the regulation of the respiratory center, thereby causing Biot's respiration, which may be accompanied by symptoms such as extreme thirst, polyuria, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. It is recommended to use medications such as sodium bicarbonate tablets and potassium chloride sustained-release tablets under a doctor's guidance for treatment.
During treatment, patients should receive targeted therapy according to specific causes under the guidance of a doctor to improve respiratory conditions and quality of life.
