Can Scrophularia and Cornus officinalis be used together?
Generally speaking, Radix Scrophulariae (Xuanshen) and Fructus Corni (Shanzhuyu) can be used together, but this should be done under the guidance of a TCM physician. The specific analysis is as follows:

Xuanshen has a slightly cold nature and possesses functions of clearing heat, cooling the blood, nourishing yin to reduce fire, and detoxifying with dispersing nodules. It can be used to treat symptoms such as heat entering the nutrient-blood stage in febrile diseases, thirst with a dark red tongue, and irritability. Shanzhuyu has a sour and bitter taste with an astringent property, and a slightly warm nature; it functions to nourish the liver and kidneys and to consolidate and relieve dampness. It can be used for symptoms caused by deficiency of the liver and kidneys, such as soreness and weakness of the waist and knees, dizziness, tinnitus, impotence, and premature ejaculation. When used together, these two herbs can harmonize yin and yang and nourish the kidneys.
However, if the patient has a cold constitution or weakness of the spleen and stomach, excessive use of the cooling Xuanshen may worsen cold symptoms or damage the yang energy of the spleen and stomach. Shanzhuyu has warming and nourishing effects; if the patient has a constitution characterized by excess heat or damp-heat, it may exacerbate internal heat and phlegm production, so large amounts or long-term use should be avoided. Therefore, when using these herbs specifically, a TCM physician should determine the appropriate treatment based on the patient's individual condition and constitution; self-prescribing combinations should be avoided.
During the use of Chinese medicinal materials, diet should also be appropriately adjusted to avoid spicy and stimulating foods. Instead, bland and easily digestible foods can be chosen to aid in recovery.
