Can geranium be used to treat athlete's foot?
Athlete's foot, medically known as tinea pedis, is a fungal infection of the skin. Geranium, also known as "laogucao," has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Its active ingredients may inhibit fungal growth to some extent, helping to alleviate symptoms such as itching and peeling caused by athlete's foot. When symptoms of tinea pedis are mild, such as only slight itching or minor peeling, patients may try washing the affected area with a decoction of geranium or applying topical medications containing geranium extract to assist in symptom relief.

However, when tinea pedis is severe, such as when accompanied by infection, erosion, or blisters, using geranium alone may not achieve the desired therapeutic effect. At this stage, more effective antifungal medications should be used, such as luliconazole cream, itraconazole capsules, or clotrimazole cream, as directed by a physician, to control the progression of the condition.
Additionally, if patients are allergic to geranium, its use may cause allergic reactions such as redness, swelling, and itching of the skin, potentially worsening the condition. Therefore, before using geranium to treat athlete's foot, patients should first perform a skin test to ensure they are not allergic to geranium.
