Can the Chinese herb Pulsatilla (Baitouweng) treat hemorrhoids?
Traditional Chinese herb Pulsatilla (Baitouweng) generally cannot cure hemorrhoids, although it may provide some auxiliary improvement, it cannot completely treat the condition. If physical discomfort occurs, it is recommended to seek medical attention at a hospital as soon as possible and follow the guidance of a physician for appropriate management.

Pulsatilla is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb known for its effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, cooling the blood, and stopping dysentery. For internal hemorrhoids, external hemorrhoids, or mixed hemorrhoids caused by downward infiltration of damp-heat, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as anal burning and rectal bleeding, Pulsatilla can be used as an adjunctive treatment to help alleviate inflammation and stop bleeding. However, the use of traditional Chinese medicine should follow the principle of syndrome differentiation and treatment, and must be appropriately combined under the guidance of a TCM physician.
Although Pulsatilla can improve the symptoms of hemorrhoids, it cannot completely cure them. The formation of hemorrhoids is related to various factors such as prolonged sitting, constipation, and increased abdominal pressure, which lead to congestion or stasis and swelling of the venous plexus in the anal canal or lower rectum. While Pulsatilla can alleviate some symptoms, it cannot fundamentally resolve these issues. Therefore, relying solely on Pulsatilla for treatment is insufficient for patients with hemorrhoids.
During treatment, patients should also pay attention to adjusting their lifestyle habits, such as avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, maintaining anal hygiene, and improving diet, to promote recovery from the condition.
