Introduction
A 4-year-old child smacking lips during sleep may be caused by factors such as excessive mental excitement, oral herpes simplex, or gastroesophageal reflux. It could also result from autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Patients should pay attention to avoiding excessive food intake before bedtime, maintaining good oral hygiene, and developing the habit of brushing teeth in the morning and evening.

A 4-year-old child smacking lips during sleep might be caused by excessive mental excitement, oral herpes simplex, or gastroesophageal reflux.

1. Excessive mental excitement: If a child plays too hard during the day or becomes overly excited mentally, the cerebral cortex may not rest and remains in an excited state even after sleep begins. This can lead to lip-smacking during sleep. Ensuring more restful sleep is recommended.

2. Oral herpes simplex: Lip-smacking during sleep in a 4-year-old could also be due to oral herpes simplex infection. After the herpes virus invades the mouth, it can affect the oral mucosa and cause increased saliva production, leading to drooling and lip-smacking. Medications such as Acyclovir tablets, Kairuijian spray (for children), and Lanqin oral liquid may be used under a doctor's guidance for treatment.

3. Gastroesophageal reflux: Gastroesophageal reflux can also cause lip-smacking during sleep in a 4-year-old. After the child falls asleep, stomach acid or gastric contents may reflux through the esophagus into the mouth and then be swallowed again, resulting in lip-smacking. Treatment may include medications like Domperidone suspension and calcium carbonate tablets, as directed by a doctor.

Lip-smacking during sleep in 4-year-olds could also be caused by autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Active treatment is necessary, and attention should be paid to avoiding overeating before bedtime and maintaining good oral hygiene in daily life.
