Can Bupleurum be steeped in water for consumption?
Bupleurum (Chai Hu) can generally be consumed as an herbal tea; however, it is recommended to follow medical advice for appropriate use.

Under normal circumstances, Bupleurum, as a traditional Chinese herb, can be consumed as a tea infusion. Bupleurum has effects of relieving exterior syndromes, reducing fever, and soothing the liver to relieve depression. For mild symptoms such as fever and headache caused by external wind-heat, drinking an appropriate amount of Bupleurum tea may provide some auxiliary relief. Its liver-soothing properties may help regulate mood in individuals experiencing emotional distress or liver qi stagnation caused by stress and pressure. Generally speaking, most people can consume Bupleurum tea moderately, especially those experiencing the aforementioned symptoms.
Select high-quality Bupleurum, wash it thoroughly, and soak it in warm water for a period of time before boiling or steeping directly in hot water. The liquid after boiling can be filtered to remove residue before consumption, or alternatively, the Bupleurum can be steeped in hot water for 10–15 minutes before drinking. It can be taken multiple times throughout the day and is preferably consumed on an empty stomach before meals. However, it should be noted that Bupleurum has a relatively cold nature, and long-term consumption may worsen conditions in individuals with weak constitutions or pre-existing stomach disorders.
Bupleurum can also be combined with other Chinese herbs to enhance its therapeutic effects, but this should be done under the guidance of a physician. If any adverse reactions occur after consuming Bupleurum tea, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention.
