Can I take Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong) during menstruation?
If there are relevant indications for Chuanxiong, it can generally be taken during menstruation as directed by a physician. If the body is healthy or experiencing other discomforts, Chuanxiong usually should not be taken.

If there is significant pain during menstruation and the TCM diagnosis identifies it as dysmenorrhea due to blood stasis, taking an appropriate amount of Chuanxiong may help alleviate symptoms. Chuanxiong has the effect of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, which may help improve circulation and relieve menstrual pain. For women experiencing light menstrual flow, dark menstrual blood, or irregular menstruation, an appropriate amount of Chuanxiong may help regulate the menstrual cycle.
However, Chuanxiong's blood-activating effect may lead to excessive menstrual bleeding; therefore, women with normal or heavy menstrual flow should avoid taking Chuanxiong during menstruation. Chuanxiong may affect embryo implantation or induce miscarriage, so pregnant women or those planning pregnancy should avoid taking Chuanxiong not only during menstruation but throughout the entire pregnancy and preconception period. As a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, Chuanxiong must be used strictly according to the principles of TCM syndrome differentiation and treatment.
Taking Chuanxiong during menstruation must be done under a doctor's guidance to avoid self-medicating blindly. Avoid raw, cold, spicy, or irritating foods, and consume moderate amounts of warming foods such as red dates and brown sugar.
