How many days does it take for swelling on the bridge of the nose to subside after trauma?
If a patient accidentally injures the nasal bridge—causing swelling—the swelling typically resolves within 7–10 days. If the swelling is mild, oral antibiotics may be considered for anti-inflammatory treatment. However, if the nasal swelling is pronounced, intravenous administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics—such as cefuroxime sodium or ceftriaxone sodium injection—is recommended.
In addition, heat application can help reduce swelling following nasal bridge injury. During the early phase (within the first 72 hours post-injury), cold compresses are advised; thereafter, heat therapy may be substituted. Gentle massage may also be employed to alleviate swelling and promote local blood circulation, thereby accelerating resolution of edema.
While the nasal bridge remains swollen, patients should avoid frequently touching or manipulating it with their hands to prevent re-injury or potential nasal bone fracture. Hydration should be increased, and intake of spicy foods minimized.
