How to treat scrotal scabies nodules
Generally, scrotal scabies nodules may be caused by factors such as poor local hygiene of the scrotum, inadequate disinfection of clothing covering the scrotal area, simple scrotal scabies nodules, scrotal scabies nodules combined with contact dermatitis, or scrotal scabies nodules combined with folliculitis. It is recommended to seek timely medical attention, identify the underlying cause, and improve the condition under a doctor's guidance through general treatments, medication, and other methods. A detailed analysis is as follows:
1. Poor local hygiene of the scrotum: The scrotal skin contains many folds. If not cleaned promptly, sweat and dirt can accumulate, easily leaving behind scabies mites and their metabolic products, which continuously irritate the skin to form nodules, accompanied by significant itching. Wash the scrotum and surrounding areas daily with warm water, and keep dry after patting dry.
2. Incomplete disinfection of clothing in the scrotal area: Underwear, close-fitting clothes, or bedding that has been worn but not thoroughly disinfected may retain scabies mites, which repeatedly come into contact with the scrotal skin, making the nodules difficult to resolve. Boil close-fitting clothes and bedding in water for 15-20 minutes, then expose them to sunlight for more than 4 hours.
3. Simple scrotal scabies nodules: After scabies mites invade the stratum corneum of the scrotal skin, they trigger a local immune reaction forming firm nodules, which are usually light red or skin-colored, about the size of a soybean, with intensified itching at night. Patients should follow medical advice to apply topical medications such as sulfur ointment, crotamiton cream, or hydrocortisone butyrate cream.
4. Scrotal scabies nodules combined with contact dermatitis: Nodules or improper topical medication can trigger contact dermatitis on the scrotal skin, causing erythema, papules, and intensified itching. In addition to continuing anti-scabies treatment, take oral medications like loratadine tablets, cetirizine hydrochloride tablets, or ebastine tablets as directed by a physician to alleviate symptoms.
5. Scrotal scabies nodules combined with folliculitis: Scratching the nodules can damage the scrotal skin, allowing Staphylococcus aureus to invade and cause folliculitis, resulting in small red pustules accompanied by mild pain. In addition to anti-scabies treatment, apply topical medications such as mupirocin ointment, fusidic acid cream, or compound polymyxin B ointment as directed by a physician.
In daily life, avoid scratching the scrotal area with hands, and keep fingernails trimmed to prevent further skin damage. Maintain a well-ventilated living environment and regularly disinfect bed sheets, pillowcases, and other bedding. Comprehensive care can promote the resolution of scrotal scabies nodules and maintain healthy scrotal skin.
