Introduction
If the swelling and pain are caused by food impaction or brief irritation from tooth brushing, the gums will gradually reduce swelling within 1–3 days and the pain will subside after promptly cleaning out debris with dental floss and adjusting brushing pressure. At this stage, inflammation remains limited to the surface of the gums and has not spread deeper into the tissues. However, if the condition is due to gingivitis or periodontitis, the inflammation has already damaged the gum or periodontal tissues.

The number of days required for recovery from swollen and painful gums varies depending on the cause. Mild inflammation may subside within 1–3 days, periodontal disease typically requires 7–14 days, and cases involving abscesses may take longer than 14 days. If symptoms of swelling or pain occur, prompt medical attention is necessary to prevent worsening inflammation.

If the swelling and pain are caused by food impaction or temporary irritation from brushing, gently cleaning debris with dental floss and adjusting brushing pressure can lead to gradual reduction of swelling and pain within 1–3 days. In such cases, inflammation remains superficial, limited to the surface layer of the gums without penetrating deeper tissues.

When gingivitis or periodontitis is the underlying cause, the inflammation has already damaged the gum or periodontal tissues. Treatment involves professional scaling to remove tartar and plaque, along with topical medications to control inflammation. Recovery usually takes 7–14 days. If an abscess has formed, pus must first be drained before treatment can proceed, extending recovery beyond 14 days and often requiring multiple follow-up visits.

For daily care, brush teeth every day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and proper brushing techniques, rinse the mouth with warm salt water after meals to reduce food residue, and avoid spicy or excessively hot foods to minimize gum irritation.
