In the early postoperative period, running is not recommended. At this stage, the surgical wound has not fully healed and the abdominal muscles and intra-abdominal tissues are still recovering. Vigorous activities like running may cause wound dehiscence, increased intra-abdominal pressure, and even raise the risk of intestinal adhesions. Light activities such as slow walking are more appropriate during this phase, as they help promote gastrointestinal function recovery without placing excessive strain on the body.

As recovery progresses, if the wound is healing well and there are no symptoms such as abdominal pain or bloating, a gradual transition to running may begin. Generally, minimally invasive surgery allows for faster recovery—patients may start brisk walking 2–3 weeks after surgery and slowly progress to short-distance jogging. For open abdominal surgery, recovery is somewhat slower, and jogging may need to be delayed until 3–4 weeks or longer after surgery. When beginning to run, start with low intensity and short distances—such as 10–15 minutes per session—and monitor your body's response. If discomfort such as abdominal pain or wound pulling occurs, stop immediately and rest.
