Is Kaihoujian really effective for acute laryngitis?
Acute laryngitis may be somewhat alleviated with Kaihoujian, which is typically available as a mouth rinse or spray. It acts directly on the mucous membranes of the throat, helping to relieve discomfort such as soreness, swelling, and burning sensations. However, it cannot cure acute laryngitis completely and should be used in conjunction with treatments targeting the underlying cause. If symptoms such as worsening hoarseness or difficulty breathing occur, immediate medical attention is recommended.

Kaihoujian usually contains ingredients that clear heat, detoxify, reduce swelling, and relieve pain. After application, it coats the inflamed throat mucosa directly, reducing congestion and edema, alleviating symptoms like painful swallowing and the sensation of a foreign body in the throat, thereby improving patient comfort. It is particularly suitable for mild cases during the early stages of acute laryngitis.
It should be noted, however, that acute laryngitis is mostly caused by viral or bacterial infections. Kaihoujian does not have anti-infective properties; therefore, if the cause is bacterial, antimicrobial medications are required, while viral infections require symptomatic and supportive care. For children or patients with severe symptoms, using Kaihoujian alone may fail to control the condition and could delay proper treatment. Combination therapy under medical supervision is necessary in such cases.
In daily care, the vocal cords and throat should be given adequate rest. Avoid loud speaking or prolonged voice use. Drink plenty of warm water to keep the throat moist, avoid spicy and irritating foods, maintain appropriate indoor humidity, and minimize irritation to the throat mucosa from dry air.
