Introduction
When eating shrimp, it is generally safe to drink most common beverages such as plain water, mineral water, light fruit juice, milk, etc. However, it is not recommended to consume beer, strong tea, or large amounts of chilled drinks, as these may cause physical discomfort or impair nutrient absorption. Shrimp is rich in protein and purines, and beer also contains significant amounts of purines. Consuming both together can rapidly increase uric acid levels in the body.

Shrimp is rich in protein and purines, and beer also contains significant amounts of purines. Consuming both together can rapidly increase uric acid levels in the body, potentially triggering gout—especially posing higher risks for individuals with gout or high uric acid levels—and may additionally increase the metabolic burden on the kidneys.

Strong tea contains tannins, which can bind with the protein in shrimp to form indigestible precipitates. This not only hinders protein absorption but may also irritate the gastrointestinal tract, leading to bloating, abdominal pain, and indigestion. Drinking large quantities of chilled beverages can cause constriction of blood vessels in the gastrointestinal tract; when combined with the naturally cooling nature of shrimp, this may easily lead to diarrhea.

When eating shrimp, it is advisable to choose room-temperature plain water or light fruit juice, and to moderate the amount of beverage consumed. Wait 1–2 hours after eating shrimp before drinking strong tea, to avoid direct interaction between tannins and protein. Additionally, pay attention to the freshness of the shrimp to ensure food safety.
