Do cervical cysts cause pain during intercourse?
Cervical cysts usually do not cause pain during sexual intercourse. Most cervical cysts are benign, and if the cyst is small and there is no infection or rupture, there is typically no noticeable discomfort during sex. However, pain may occur during intercourse if the cyst is large or if there is accompanying inflammation or injury. If pain during intercourse is frequent or accompanied by bleeding, prompt medical evaluation is recommended.

Cervical cysts commonly form due to blocked secretion drainage from cervical glands. These cysts may be located on the surface or deeper within the cervix. Since the cervix itself has relatively insensitive pain nerves, small cysts generally do not create mechanical obstruction or cause pain during intercourse. Most patients discover them incidentally during routine physical examinations.
However, when the cyst is large, friction or impact during intercourse may compress surrounding tissues or even cause the cyst to rupture. If cervical inflammation (cervicitis) is present, the cervical mucosa may be congested and swollen; stimulation during intercourse can exacerbate the inflammatory response, leading to pain, as well as possible symptoms such as abnormal discharge or odor.
In daily life, maintaining external genital hygiene and avoiding unhygienic sexual practices can help reduce the risk of infection. Regular gynecological check-ups are important for monitoring changes in cyst size. During intercourse, gentle movements are advised, excessive force should be avoided, and if mild discomfort occurs, it's best to pause temporarily and resume only after the body has recovered.
