What is proctalgia nervosa?
Anorectal neurosis is a functional disorder characterized primarily by abnormal sensations in the anorectal region. It is essentially a somatization symptom caused by neurological dysfunction, without any identifiable organic pathology. The severity of symptoms often correlates with the patient's psychological and mental state. A detailed analysis is as follows:

Patients typically experience diverse and recurrent symptoms, commonly including anal heaviness, pain, itching, burning sensation, or a subjective feeling of foreign body obstruction and incomplete defecation. Some individuals may also report perianal numbness or crawling sensations. These symptoms tend to worsen when attention is focused on them and significantly improve when attention is diverted or during sleep. Clinical examinations such as digital rectal examination and colonoscopy usually reveal no abnormalities.
The condition is closely associated with psychological factors. Prolonged anxiety, depression, stress, emotional tension, past trauma or surgery involving the anorectal area, poor bowel habits, and excessive health-related concerns may all trigger or exacerbate symptoms.
Management requires a comprehensive approach. First, medical evaluations should be conducted to rule out organic diseases and alleviate patient concerns. Secondly, patients should adjust their mindset, avoid excessive focus on local symptoms, and engage in physical activity or hobbies to redirect attention.
