What are the usage methods of medical sterile cotton pads?

Medical sterile cotton pads are used for exudate drainage care, local pressure hemostasis, assisting skin disinfection, mucosal protection and isolation, and padding wound surfaces during dressing changes. Strict aseptic techniques must be followed to meet various nursing needs. If symptoms such as increased redness and swelling of the wound, abnormal exudate, or skin allergy occur after use, medical attention is recommended promptly.

1. Exudate Drainage Care: For large-area wounds or those with significant exudate, multiple layers of cotton pads can be stacked over the wound to utilize their high absorbency, effectively drawing out and absorbing fluid to prevent accumulation that could lead to infection. Regular monitoring and timely replacement are essential.

2. Local Pressure Hemostasis: During wound bleeding, cover the bleeding site with a sterile cotton pad and apply firm pressure for 5–10 minutes. The cushioning effect of the cotton pad helps reduce vascular damage. After hemostasis is achieved, keep the pad in place and secure it properly, replacing it later as directed by medical advice.

3. Assisting Skin Disinfection: When disinfecting skin, cut the cotton pad to an appropriate size, soak it with a suitable amount of disinfectant, and wipe the target area in an inward-to-outward motion. This method prevents direct contact of the disinfectant with deep wound tissues, minimizing irritation while ensuring effective disinfection.

4. Mucosal Protection and Isolation: When used on sensitive mucosal areas such as the oral cavity or perianal region, trim the cotton pad into a conforming shape and gently place it over mucosal wounds or areas prone to friction. This isolates external irritants, reduces pain, and creates favorable conditions for mucosal healing.

5. Wound Surface Padding During Dressing Changes: During dressing changes, place sterile cotton pads around the wound on surrounding skin to collect secretions, residual medication, or waste disinfectant liquids. This prevents contamination of adjacent skin and maintains a clean, sterile dressing environment.

Prior to use, check the sterility status and expiration date of the cotton pad, and select an appropriate thickness based on the wound condition. Avoid touching the side of the cotton pad that contacts the wound with bare hands during application. Used cotton pads should be sealed and disposed of according to biohazard waste protocols to prevent cross-contamination.
