What Causes Itchy Nipples?
Itching of the nipple is commonly caused by skin disorders or external irritants. Examples include allergic reactions to fabrics such as silk or fleece, excessive friction from clothing, and underlying breast skin conditions—these are frequent causes of nipple pruritus. However, in some cases, certain breast tumors may also cause itching or discomfort in the nipple area. Therefore, women are advised to choose cotton undergarments to minimize irritation and allergic reactions triggered by chemical substances.
Additionally, overly tight undergarments can impair blood circulation in the nipple region, leading to itching. Prolonged sweating or occlusion from tight undergarments may induce nipple eczema, which typically affects the nipple and surrounding areolar skin. During acute episodes, patients may develop erosion of the breast skin, intense pruritus, pain, and scaling. If noticeable scaling or changes in skin color appear on the nipple or areola, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation and follow professional guidance for appropriate management or treatment.
