Why does clear fluid come out of my nose when I lower my head?
Clear watery discharge from the nose when lowering the head may be caused by nasal irritation, dry environment, allergic rhinitis, acute rhinitis, or sinusitis. Symptoms can be improved by avoiding irritants, moisturizing the nasal passages, or medical treatment. If the discharge persists or is accompanied by headache or fever, prompt medical attention is necessary.
1. Nasal Irritation: Inhaling cold air, dust, or irritating odors can increase nasal mucosal secretion, leading to clear, watery discharge when bending the head forward due to gravity. It is recommended to avoid irritating environments, wear a mask outdoors, and use saline solution to rinse the nasal cavity to relieve discomfort.
2. Dry Environment: Low humidity can cause nasal mucosa to become dry and congested, increasing secretions that may flow out as clear mucus when the head is lowered, possibly accompanied by a burning sensation in the nose. It is advised to use a humidifier to increase indoor humidity and clean the nasal cavity daily with warm water to maintain mucosal moisture.

3. Allergic Rhinitis: After exposure to allergens such as pollen or dust mites, the nasal mucosa undergoes an allergic reaction, producing increased clear, watery secretions. Symptoms worsen when the head is lowered and are often accompanied by sneezing and nasal itching. Patients may take medications such as loratadine hydrochloride syrup, mometasone furoate nasal spray, or montelukast sodium chewable tablets under medical guidance to alleviate symptoms.
4. Acute Rhinitis: Viral infection causes acute inflammation of the nasal mucosa, resulting in congestion, swelling, and increased secretions. Clear nasal discharge occurs when the head is lowered, often accompanied by nasal congestion and sore throat. It is recommended to take medications such as ribavirin granules, pseudoephedrine hydrochloride nasal drops, or acetaminophen suspension drops under a doctor's supervision to relieve symptoms.
5. Sinusitis: Nasal inflammation spreading to the sinuses causes sinus mucosal inflammation and production of inflammatory secretions. When the head is lowered, these secretions may drain backward and flow out as clear or mucoid fluid, often accompanied by headache and reduced sense of smell. Patients may follow medical advice to use medications such as cefaclor dry suspension, Biyuan Tongqiao Granules, or isotonic seawater nasal spray to improve symptoms.
Maintain good indoor ventilation, avoid frequent nose picking that may damage the mucosa, eat a light diet rich in fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and maintain regular sleep patterns to boost immunity and reduce nasal discomfort.
