What causes a persistent uncomfortable or blocked sensation in the throat, and what should be done about it?
The throat often feels uncomfortable or as if something is stuck, which may be caused by excessive voice use, dietary irritation, chronic pharyngitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), tonsillitis, etc. Symptoms can be improved by adjusting habits, eating a light diet, and medication. If symptoms persist for more than two weeks or are accompanied by difficulty swallowing or hoarseness, medical attention should be sought promptly.
1. Excessive voice use: Long-term loud speaking or frequent voice use can cause congestion and swelling of the throat mucosa, leading to discomfort and a sensation of blockage. It is recommended to reduce voice use, avoid shouting, drink plenty of warm water to soothe the throat, and, if necessary, suck on mild throat lozenges.
2. Dietary irritation: Frequent consumption of spicy, hot, or greasy foods can irritate the throat mucosa, causing local discomfort and a feeling of obstruction. A light, easily digestible diet is advised. Eat more throat-soothing foods such as pears and white fungus (yin-er), and avoid tobacco and alcohol.

3. Chronic pharyngitis: Long-term inflammation irritates the throat mucosa, resulting in congestion and lymphoid follicle hyperplasia, causing persistent discomfort and a sensation of blockage, often accompanied by dryness and a foreign body sensation in the throat. Under a doctor’s guidance, patients may use medications such as watermelon frost throat tablets, Qinghou Liyan granules, or compound borax mouthwash to relieve symptoms.
4. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): Stomach acid reflux irritates the throat mucosa, causing throat inflammation and swelling, leading to discomfort and a sensation of blockage, often accompanied by acid regurgitation and heartburn. Under a doctor’s guidance, medications such as omeprazole enteric-coated capsules, domperidone tablets, or hydrotalcite chewable tablets may be used to alleviate symptoms.
5. Tonsillitis: Bacterial infection causes inflammation of the tonsils, leading to tonsil enlargement that presses against the throat, resulting in discomfort and a sensation of blockage, often accompanied by sore throat and worsening pain during swallowing. As directed by a physician, patients may use medications such as amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium dispersible tablets, Pudilan anti-inflammatory oral liquid, or compound chlorhexidine mouthwash to improve symptoms.
To maintain throat health, keep the throat moist by drinking warm water regularly, maintain a regular sleep schedule and avoid staying up late, reduce intake of spicy and cold foods, engage in light activity after meals, and avoid lying down immediately after eating.
