Introduction
Dry, yellow nasal mucus may result from dry environments, the recovery phase of a cold, sinusitis, acute rhinitis, or nasopharyngitis. Symptoms can be improved by moisturizing the nasal passages, increasing fluid intake, and medical treatment if necessary. If symptoms persist for more than one week or are accompanied by headache or nosebleeds, prompt medical attention is advised. Low air humidity can cause dehydration of the nasal mucosa.

Yellow, dry nasal mucus may result from dry environments, the recovery phase of a cold, sinusitis, acute rhinitis, or nasopharyngitis. Symptoms can be improved by moisturizing the nasal passages, increasing fluid intake, and medical treatment. If symptoms persist for more than one week or are accompanied by headache or nosebleeds, prompt medical attention is necessary.

1. Dry Environment: Low air humidity causes moisture loss in the nasal mucosa, leading to concentrated, dried, yellowish secretions, often accompanied by nasal burning and crusting. It is recommended to use a humidifier to increase air moisture and apply saline nasal sprays to hydrate the nasal cavity and soften crusts for easier removal.

2. Recovery Phase of a Cold: During mucosal healing after a viral infection, inflammation subsides and secretions decrease, becoming thick and yellowish-dry, while nasal congestion gradually improves. It is advised to drink plenty of water, maintain a light diet, ensure adequate rest, and avoid spicy or irritating foods.

3. Sinusitis: Bacterial infection in the nasal sinuses causes inflammation, resulting in thick, yellow mucus that dries out as moisture evaporates. This is often accompanied by nasal congestion, headache, and reduced sense of smell. Under medical guidance, medications such as cefuroxime axetil tablets, mometasone furoate nasal spray, and eucalyptus oil & pinene enteric-coated soft capsules may be used to relieve symptoms.

4. Acute Rhinitis: Nasal mucosal inflammation caused by bacterial or viral infection leads to increased thick, yellow secretions that dry into crusts due to moisture loss, along with nasal itching and sneezing. Under a doctor’s supervision, patients may use amoxicillin capsules, oxymetazoline hydrochloride nasal spray, or Biyuan Tongqiao granules to alleviate discomfort.

5. Nasopharyngitis: Inflammation of the nasopharyngeal mucosa due to infection causes secretions to drain backward into the nasal cavity, where they dry and turn yellow. Symptoms include nasopharyngeal dryness and a sensation of a foreign body. As directed by a physician, medications such as cefaclor capsules, budesonide nasal spray, or Pudilan anti-inflammatory oral liquid may be used to improve symptoms.

To maintain nasal health, keep the nasal passages clean by rinsing with saline solution, avoid forceful nose picking or blowing, stay away from smoke and dust, eat a light diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and maintain regular sleep patterns to strengthen the resistance of the nasal mucosa.
