What ointment can be applied after squeezing a boil?
After squeezing a boil, you may apply mupirocin ointment, erythromycin ointment, fusidic acid cream, povidone-iodine solution, or benzoyl peroxide gel. These should be used after proper cleaning and disinfection to prevent infection and promote wound healing. If redness spreads, pus increases, or fever develops after squeezing, prompt medical attention is recommended.
1. Mupirocin Ointment: Broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, particularly effective against Staphylococcus aureus. It inhibits bacterial growth and helps prevent infection after squeezing a boil, relieving redness, swelling, and pain. Apply 2–3 times daily, covering the affected area.
2. Erythromycin Ointment: A macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. Effective against Gram-positive bacterial infections, suitable for mildly infected boil wounds. Gentle and non-irritating, it is ideal for routine care.

3. Fusidic Acid Cream: Broad antimicrobial coverage, effective even against drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It penetrates deeply into the skin to exert its effect and is suitable for boils with evident infection. Apply a thin layer to the cleaned area after squeezing.
4. Povidone-Iodine Solution: Not an ointment but a basic antiseptic. After squeezing, first apply povidone-iodine to kill surface bacteria and reduce infection risk. Allow it to dry before applying other topical medications, preventing bacterial residue and subsequent inflammation.
5. Benzoyl Peroxide Gel: Possesses both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It releases oxygen upon decomposition, inhibiting anaerobic bacteria. Suitable for boils associated with Propionibacterium acnes infection (such as acne). Apply sparingly after squeezing, avoiding contact with healthy skin.
Clean the wound with normal saline first, then apply medication as directed. Keep the area dry and clean, avoid water exposure and friction, wear loose and breathable clothing, and maintain a light diet avoiding spicy or irritating foods to support wound healing and minimize infection risk.
